Meyer Burger Solar Panels: made in Germany, designed in Switzerland

Last Updated: January 18, 2024By

Meyer Burger solar panels are rated as some of the world’s most efficient and durable panels – and they are exclusively imported into South Africa through SOLARWORLD Africa.

I was lucky enough to meet the SOLARWORLD Africa team at the recent solar expo at the Sandton Convention Centre. This is where I was first introduced to Meyer Burger modules.

Let’s go deeper into these high quality panels made in Europe.

Where are Meyer Burger Solar Modules developed?

Meyer Burger solar panels are developed in Swiss laboratories and manufactured in Germany’s high-end factories in Solar Valley, just north of Leipzig.

These modules are state-of-the-art and include more than 40 patents resulting in premium quality.

What is the key to Meyer Burger solar panels efficiency?

The modules consist of proprietary heterojunction technology (HJT) formed by layers of silicon that result in a unique cell structure.

The result is greater absorption of solar energy and lower resistance when that converted energy moves as electrical power through the module – especially when combined with patented SmartWireTM technology.

You get up to 20 percent higher energy yield, even in low light conditions such as cloudy days or early morning/late evening.

This high performance is also guaranteed for multiple decades thanks to the durability of the patented design.

Key facts you should know

      • Meyer Burger was founded in 1953 as a watch jewel machine manufacturing company and grew from 13 employees to more than 800 today

      • The company developed high precision saws for silicon which has helped the development of the solar industry since the 1980s

      • In 2012 Meyer Burger developed the heterojunction technology and patented SmartWire Cell Connection technology

      • The PERC technology used in Meyer Burger manufacturing processes has become the industry standard for solar module production worldwide

      • Meyer Burger moved to manufacturing and marketing solar panels as a business focus in 2020

      • Meyer Burger panels are 100% lead free and contain 60% less silver and fewer solvents are used during manufacturing

      • Short transportation distances and local manufacturing results in a greatly reduced carbon footprint for the Meyer Burger company

      • Meyer Burger solar panels are recycled by the company

      • The manufacturing plants in Germany are supplied with 100% renewable energy sources

Why do we rate Meyer Burger highly in terms of efficiency?

Solar module efficiency measures what percentage of the energy from sunlight hitting the surface of the solar panel is converted to usable electricity.

The Meyer Burger models below have an efficiency of 21.8%.

How does this (currently) stack up against the competition in South Africa?

Q Cells is currently rated in ranges from 17.4% and 21.4%.

Jinko Solar is currently maxed at 21.6% (but keep an eye on the availability of the Tiger range which boasts up to 22.3% efficiency).

Canadian Solar panels available on the market in SA are rated at between 15.88% and 20.6%

Trina Solar (which we have installed on our roof at home) has an efficiency range between 16.2% and 20.4%.
